Saskia Constantinou BMus(Hons)MMus.LRSM(Violin Perf)LTCL(Vln Teaching)
Saskia Constantinou was born in Famagusta, Cyprus and emigrated with her family to Durban in 1974. Coming from musical and artistic parents, it was natural to her to follow her father’s footsteps as a professional violinist.
Saskia graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a BMus(Hons) in 1987 and with further studies attained her LRSM (Violin Performance and Teaching) and LTCL (London). During her final year at university, Saskia played as an extra player with the National Symphony Orchestra and the following year, joined on a permanent basis. She has played under numerous internationally acclaimed conductors and soloists including Piero Gamba, Othmar Maga, Julian Lloyd Webber, Kiri te Kanawa, Pavarotti, Yehudi Menuhin, Itzakh Perlman, Victor Yampolsky to name but a few as well as participating in international and local tours of the National Symphony Orchestra.
Her entrepreneurial skills led to the formation in 1997 of the Serenata String Quartet. With her arrangements of light, background music of popular works, they played for many important functions including the visit of Queen Elizabeth to South Africa as well as many presidential functions for ex-President Mandela.
During 1998, Saskia resigned from the National Symphony Orchestra to devote all her time to her tour operating company ITC Tours.
In 2000, to escape the violence of South Africa, she emigrated to Cyprus, where she is now based with her daughter. She furthered her journalism qualifications with the London School of Journalism and now compiles and produces daily classical music programmes for the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation and is the Classical Music Journalist for the Cyprus Mail.
She loves travelling, gardening, playing tennis and studying management and psychology as well as writing her Doctoral thesis during her spare time.
