Instrument Makers & Repairs
Stepan Soultanian
Stepan was born in 1965 and educated in London. He studied the violin from the age of six so, his love of the violin started very early. But it was a chance encounter with a violinmaker, while still a young teenager, that led to his desire to become a luthier. By the age of fourteen, he was repairing and starting the skill of making violins.
On completing his A-levels, he joined the famed UK school of luthiers, Newark from where he graduated with Merit. On graduating, he worked for Oxford Violins and Mila Strand where he gained four years of valuable experience in repairs, restoration and re-touching.
In 1989, he moved to Japan and worked with Chaconne, one of the largest luthier companies in the country. There, he was able to work and study with the finest instruments and bows, and amassed a wealth of knowledge, particularly concerning set-ups and tone adjustment.
In 1997, he was again invited to Japan to manage the workshop of Stradi Kanazawa. In addition to doing much restoration and repair work, he was commissioned to make a quartet of instruments and various replicas of clients’ violins.
Since 1999, he has been permanently based in Cyprus with his wife and two daughters where the excellent climate and lifestyle here provide him with a wonderful working atmosphere and environment.
He is sure that this is why many of his clients jump at the opportunity to visit him while having their instruments repaired or serviced. He also takes commissions and is often asked to visit his clients who stretch from Europe to the USA, Far East, Australia and New Zealand.
